What are the restrictions on the position of the torso with respect to the sheer line on boats such as Etchells, Dragon, and other one-design keelboats with no lifelines, and no other hiking aids?
Exactly that, class rules, but typically there aren't any restrictions on torso position per se, there's just 49.1 plus any restrictions in class rules. Some prohibit toe straps for instance.
49.2 doesn't apply, there are no lifelines. So provided he's only supported outboard by toestraps it is legitimate under 49.1 unless class rules say otherwise.
Any rule on torso position for a boat without lifelines would be pretty much unenforceable.
If I understand the photo correctly what looks like trapeze gear is a second boat close behind.
Thank you for the applicable section from the Etchells class rules. It was only an example to illustrate the kind of body position. The actual class I race is not the Etchells.
